Why Video Downloaders in the Chrome Web Store Can’t Save YouTube Videos
Updated: 2026-11-04
If you have tried several video downloader extensions in Chrome, you may have noticed that none of them save YouTube videos. That is not a bug: it is a Chrome Web Store rule.
The rule
Google’s Chrome Web Store policy does not allow extensions that download videos from YouTube. Extensions in the store that do it are removed. So the Chrome Web Store version of OneTap Save shows a short notice on YouTube instead of a download button.
What still works in Chrome
- Videos and images on many other websites — see the guides for TikTok, Vimeo, Pinterest and X (Twitter).
- MP4 and M3U8 videos playing directly on web pages.
Other browsers
The Microsoft Edge Add-ons store has a different policy, so the Edge version of OneTap Save does not have this restriction and can save some YouTube videos. Either way, only save videos you own or have permission to use, and follow YouTube’s terms.
FAQ
Is there a Chrome setting to turn YouTube downloads on?
No. The restriction is built into the Chrome Web Store version to follow the store’s policy.
Only save videos and images you own or have permission to use, and follow each site’s terms. OneTap Save does not bypass DRM or paywalls.
